In this EXCLUSIVE Bikers' blog, Si and Dave explain the forthcoming Hairy Dieters series, why they took on the challenge and the key to healthy weight-loss, Hairy Biker style...

“Everyone knows we love our food – nothing wrong with that, you might say. And, no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a little bit of what you fancy. But we were having A LOT of what we fancied, ALL the time, and the weight was creeping on. And, much as we might fight admitting to middle age, there it was for everyone to see around our middles. In truth, the travelling, tasting and constant generosity of the people we meet on our adventures were really taking their toll.

"A few months ago, when we returned from filming a series in the USA, we were both told that we needed to think seriously about losing some weight for health reasons. We were both on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and we were advised by medical professionals to do something about it. It got to a stage where it was simply a case of needing to protect our health, as we were heading down a risky road. Our families were also expressing concern, as both of our weights had continued to head upwards over the years.

"The opportunity then arose to make a TV programme about weight-loss and it was just the push we needed. The only difference between our weight-loss and that of others is that we chose to do it publicly in front of a camera, for all to watch. We see the series as being an invitation into our private lives – what our motivations were, how we did it, how we coped and how our families reacted.

"The key thing that we held onto from start to finish is the fact that our core values about eating haven’t changed at all. We’re still as keen and as passionate about food as we have always been. The whole reason for doing the series was to get down to a safe weight and maintain that weight… but it certainly doesn’t mean that we aren’t going to eat pies, drink beer, bake bread or cakes and continue to share our passion for good, honest, wholesome food.

"The whole purpose for us has been to get down to a maintainable weight, and enjoy the food that we’ve always cooked and loved. If we want to eat a steak and kidney pudding and have four pints of beer, we will. But it just means for a couple of days after that, we will have to be a bit more careful about what we eat.

"The recipes in the show and in the accompanying book are great recipes in their own right. The taste and depths of flavours, and our Hairy Biker twist, are all there. It really is irrelevant that these recipes happen to be less calorific because, when it comes down to it, it’s just bloody good food.

"We realised there were loads of blokes (and probably some ladies too) in a similar position to us who would really welcome the opportunity to turn things around without having to do anything too drastic… and if we can stop the onset of heart attacks, strokes, and type 2 diabetes, whilst encouraging people to still eat delicious grub, then it has been a very worthwhile experience - and not just for us.

"We sincerely hope you enjoy the journey that we have been on because we’ve done it with openness, integrity and honesty… and I’m sure you’ll see this through the series and book. It’s a big cheers from us to health, happiness, and great food.”

Decided that it is time for me to shift some pounds too - I had a very similar experience (3 stone in 3 months) a few years back and seeing the two of you on The One Show last night has given me a kick up the behind to do it again.

Brilliant first episode to new series! Thank you for a funny, touching, honest, and truly some of the best eccentric moments I've had the honour of sharing! Dave you have great moves baby and Si you are a Viking god! Already printed off the first recipe!

  • Saw the show last night -Fantastic!
My heart went out to you Si when you told of you experience at school - I know how that feels.

  • Will there be a book of the recipes used coming out soon I hope so.

  • Si, my heart went out to you last night, as I too was a stone for each year I aged until 11. I insulted myself, and still do aged 57,before anyone else does it. Even mates called me Fats, and I pretended it didnt hurt. So I am totally with you and will try yet again fight the comfort eating with your food. Good Luck to you Both too xx

  • Always watched you two best cooks on TV.
You both look great in a manly way of course - well done

  • Great to see the new programme, education is what people need so easy to eat not so easy to know what you are eating more importantly what it is doing for you. Si I mean this in the best possible way but I woulsd love to see your youngest son loose some wait as I am sure you do not want to see him where you were a few months ago when he is on the verge of hitting 50. Well done

  • Dear Si and Dave
I just wanted to say thanks for another brilliant series and tell you not to worry - life with healthy food is great! I love my food, adore cooking and will happily tuck into something naughty without any guilt. I still manage to stay a healthy weight as its just a question of proportion, inventiveness and being active - at the right size you have more energy anyway. Please keep up the good work and look after yourselves. You could save lives and not just your own. X

  • Big Congrats Guys on losing so much weight. I saw the programme and as a lady who likes proper food and not salad this programme is inspirational. Thankyou Dave and Si for doing this series - you look great.Keep well. x

  • Well done guys a totally inspiring programme both my husband and I are commited to losing the weight.
    Have ordered the book already.
Cant wait for the next programme

  • Hi Si and Dave,

Saw the programme and was so touched by your story Si. Although I'm a lady I have been a big child (my Dad was in the army and it felt like he was always leaving me - cake became a comfort). I was also 10 stone at age 10 and the Doctor felt it was appropriate to put me on speed at that time and there began my life journey of Yo Yo dieting. I am now 55 and realise that I am an adult now and quite capable of taking charge of myself and my emotions in a different way. I have so far lost 2 stone of the many yet to lose - but it's coming off nicely and once I can get back onto real food (I'm on a total food replacement regime at present) I hope to follow your meals and get all the taste without the waist! Good luck to us all.

  • Love the new book an show jumped on the band wagon lads

  • My husband and I have been so motivated by your programme, its great, and proves that you do not have to 'diet' to loose weight. You can still enjoy a little of the luxuries!!!! We have lost 10lb between us already this week and we intend to loose about 2st each in total for our goal weights. Because of you both we are DETERMINED! Thanks again and Well Done to you too!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very inspiring, I was given the hairy bikers diet book early december for my birthday by my other half. I was 33 that day and have struggled with my weight - well forever! I was always the fat kid at school and have still not shifted the weight. I now have a 20 month old well built boy and want to make sure I make a change for him and me. The whole family start the hairy bikers diet on Saturday once we have been shopping and cleared all the christmas remnants from the fridge. I have never felt soo confident about losing weight, so I hope a big thank you will come soon! Just need to buy a set of weighing scales!
